It was not a Peninsula District win but Gloucester’s 24-13 victory at Granby on Friday broke a 12-game losing streak and should give the Dukes some momentum coming back to the PD schedule Friday night.
"We had the confidence going in, all we needed to do was execute," said GHS coach Sonny Merchant. "It was not perfect, we still made some mistakes. We blew some opportunities to score more points and allowed some scoring opportunities." But Merchant said his defense stepped up in the win, and his special teams players performed well across the board.
After the Dukes fumbled early for a turnover in dangerous territory, Merchant said his defense stiffened and did not allow a score. The Gloucester defenders also prevented any Granby scoring in the fourth quarter when the Comets twice threatened in the red zone. "We got in some bad situations, but got out of most of them," said the coach.
