The Deltaville Deltas offense pounded out 29 runs in two games last weekend, as they blew past the VBA 61’s, 15-8 and 14-3 in Southern Virginia Adult Baseball League action.
With the wins, Deltaville (6-1) inched within a half game of the top-seeded Newport News Cardinals (7-1). The final showdown of the regular season between the top teams is this weekend, starting with a Saturday night home game at Deltaville Ballpark. Saturday’s game starts an hour earlier than usual, at 6:30 p.m.
Also on Saturday night, Nutzy, the mascot of the Richmond Flying Squirrels, will throw out the first pitch, and be available for pictures between 6 and 7 o’clock.
The Deltas visit Newport News on Sunday, in a 4 p.m. game at Monfalcone Field.
Deltas 15, 61’s 8
Deltaville broke open a 3-2 ballgame with a six-run fifth inning, and Robert Shermer blasted a three-run home run in the sixth, as the Deltas beat the 61’s, 15-8, on Saturday night in Deltaville.
The Deltas built an early 3-0 lead, but the 61’s plated a pair of runs on a defensive error in the fifth to climb within a run. The unearned runs were the only blemish on starting pitcher Harley Moore’s outing, as he scattered just three hits in five innings. Moore struck out eight, and earned the pitching victory.
The 61’s plated three runs in the top of the seventh, but Deltaville responded with three runs in the bottom half, off an RBI single by Stephen Blue and two-run double from Will Barrack. A two-run 61’s ninth inning was little threat to the Deltas’ lead.
Jacob Houston led all hitters with three hits on the night. Alexander Crittenden and Shermer each had two-hit games, while Alex Hall, Reggie Johnson, Blue, and Barrack each contributed hits to the offense.
