Wiggins’s walk-off grand slam lifts Deltas over Cards
The Deltaville Deltas won another thriller over the Newport News Cardinals on Saturday night, coming from behind twice and winning the game on a Ryan Wiggins walk-off grand slam, by the score of 8-6.
The league-leading Cardinals split the series on Sunday, defeating Deltaville 7-0. With the split, Deltaville (7-2) remains a half game behind the Cardinals (8-2). This Saturday night, the Deltas host the York Cannons at Deltaville Ballpark, with first pitch scheduled for 7:30. On Sunday, the Deltas travel to York’s Grafton High School for a 4 p.m. game.

Down by two with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning, Ryan Wiggins blasted a walk-off grand slam, and the Deltas defeated the Newport News Cardinals, 8-6, in another Saturday night thriller in Deltaville.
The Cardinals took an early 3-0 lead, plating a run in the second inning, and took advantage of a defensive error in the top of the fourth to plate two more runs.
The Deltaville bats woke up in the bottom of the fourth, stringing together four consecutive singles to cut the lead to 3-2. Deltaville scored twice more in the fifth to take a 4-3 lead.
Newport News fired back in the seventh, tying the game with a solo home run. They plated a run in the eighth to take the lead, and added an insurance run in the ninth.
However, the Deltas staged their second last-inning comeback against the Cardinals of the season in the bottom of the ninth. Travis Crump and Ryan Reynolds started the inning with singles, and after Alexander Crittenden walked to load the bases, Wiggins slammed an 0-1 pitch into the trees in left field to win the game.
Reggie Johnson picked up his second pitching win of the season, tossing five innings out of relief. He allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits while striking out four. Harley Moore started the game, pitching four innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits while striking out six. T. Crump and Scott Crump led Deltas hitters with two hits apiece.

Despite outhitting the Cardinals 10 hits to seven, Deltaville stranded 11 runners on base—including twice with the bases loaded—and fell by the score of 7-0 on Sunday.
