The Gloucester High School track and field team opened the indoor season at the Peninsula Icebreaker Invitational Friday and Saturday at the Boo Williams Sports Complex.

Evan Wagner, competing in the high jump, cleared 5’4" to qualify for the Peninsula District, Eastern Region and Virginia Group AAA track meets. Her achievement in the opening winter meet earned her "elite athlete" status from Milestat, and she was named Milestat’s athlete of the week in jumps.

Khadijah Payne and Shawnique Thornton each qualified for the district meet with shot put throws of 31’8" and 26’7", respectively. Blake Waters also qualified for the district event in the 3200 meter race with a time of 10:40.38.

GHS head coach John Perrin said the meet was a great start to the season and was a great learning experience for the new track athletes. He said many of the his team members have been working hard and becoming progressively better, and several were very close to qualifying for the district meet during the Icebreaker.
