Unbeaten GHS softball adds three wins
Gloucester High School varsity softball players improved to 11-0 with three wins in recent action. The Dukes disposed of visiting Hampton with a 25-run shutout on Tuesday.
Morgan Haywood took a no-hitter into the fifth inning against the Crabbers but lost it on a one-out single. She ended the day with seven strikeouts and no walks. Shelby Alto pitched the last two outs to close the game.
Alyssa Shackleford led the Dukes offensively with five hits, while Alto and Haywood added three each. Macy Robbins, Alissa Upton and Rebecca Jenkins contributed two hits apiece and Haywood and Jenkins each notched a home run in the win.
The Dukes beat their hosts at Menchville, 12-6, on Friday with a couple high-scoring innings. They put seven runs on the board in the third and added five more in the fourth.
The Monarchs took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning and had runners on first and second with one out in the second before Haywood pitched out of trouble. The sophomore left-hander induced a soft line drive to Shackleford at shortstop and then threw to Upton at second for a double play.
In the third, Jenkins led off the inning with a base hit, Alto reached on an error and Robbins singled to load the bases. After Kaleigh Arnett walked to force in Jenkins, Haywood hit a double to the left center field gap for a 3-1 lead. Three more hits, a walk and an error pushed to lead to 7-1.
