The 2012 L. Wayne Hudgins Memorial Wharf to Wharf Swim, held on Sunday at Williams Wharf Landing in Mathews, was the most successful since the annual event began six years ago.

Forty swimmers ranging in age from 11 to 80+ raised more than $12,000 to benefit the Mathews Land Conservancy’s boathouse building project, according to spokesperson Mimi Ulsaker. Not only that, but the total could increase. Ulsaker said on Monday that money is still coming in and sponsorships are still being accepted.

The 1,400-meter open water swim took place under cloudy skies, but the temperature was warm and the water was calm.

For the fourth year in a row, Navy Ensign Tucker Witt placed first, with a time of 19:42. He was followed by Michael Hobart (22:02) and Kendall Worland (23:54). Everyone finished the swim within an hour, said Ulsaker.

Other top 10 finishers were Zack Sauter (24:26), Molly Broderson (25:05), Kim Kurkowski (25:10), Patty Hall (27:18), Darbie Maccubbin (28:05), William Bukland (29:58) and Oliver Ulsaker (30:30).
