Field hockey tryouts begin Aug. 16

Conditioning and tryouts for the Page Middle School field hockey team will begin on Monday, Aug. 16, with a session from 5 to 8 p.m. Sports physicals are required to attend. For more information contact coach Sandy Beverage at sbeverage@gc.k12.va.us.

Triple Crown Nationals

The North Cubs 17U baseball team took third place in the 28-team field of the U.S. Triple Crown Nationals last week in Richmond. The Cubs team is comprised of players from Gloucester, Middlesex, West Point and Northumberland.

Boating class offered on Saturday

A course titled "About Boating Safely" will be held from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, at Abingdon Volunteer Fire and Rescue, Station #3, 2676 Hayes Road, Hayes.

A notice said the course satisfies the Virginia Boating Safety Education requirement for all operators of recreational boats and personal watercraft.

Cost for the course, which is conducted by the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and co-sponsored by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, is $20 and includes a textbook. To register, contact Dick Price, USCG Auxiliary, Flotilla 64, at 684-0730 or rprice11@cox.net.

Women’s golf winners named

Winners of the Piankatank River Ladies Golf Association’s three-person best ball competition, held on July 29 at the Hartfield course, were:

First flight—Lindy Hatch, Sarah Finney and Ann Stanley (first place); Judy Spain, Chong Hudgins and Ann Padgett (second place). Second flight—Mabel Cosby, Marny Richardson and Sharon Dunaway (first place); Ruth Wallace, Sally Austin and Sharon Dunaway (second place).

On Monday, the Deer Run Women’s Golf Association held a "tee to green" contest at the Newport News course, using half of a player’s handicap. Winners were:

First flight—Nina Carter (first place, 43.5), Joan Sova (second place, 44) and Lindy Hatch (third place, 44.5). Second flight—Barbara Keefe (first place, 46.6), Sheila Lia (second place, 48.5) and Alice Watts (third place, 51). Third flight—Cricket Call (first place, 51), Mel Foley (second place, 53) and Joanne Zimmer (third place, 54).

Piankatank men hold best ball competition

The Piankatank River Golf Club’s senior men held a two-man best ball net competition last Wednesday at the Hartfield course. Winners were:

First place—Wade Hannum and Don Rickards (56); second place—Curtis Deane and John Matthews (57); third place—George Cocharn and Hubie Falkenstein (59), and fourth place—Jack Pitts and Mike Woodberry (59).
