South adds two more no hitters for JV Lady Devils
The Mathews High School jayvee softball team added two wins this week, improving the squad’s overall record to 6-3; 3-1 in the Tidewater District.
Last Thursday the Lady Devils hosted the Poquoson Islanders and traveled to West Point on Tuesday to face the Pointers. Both contests were five-inning games due to the mercy rule. Madison South pitched all 10 innings for the Devils, allowing no hits, striking out 21, and walking only four batters in the two games combined. South now has three no-hitters for the season.
The contest with Poquoson was a close game through four innings with Mathews leading 2-0 after four complete. The Islander pitcher seemed to tire going into the fifth inning, walking the bases loaded before hitting the next batter, making the score 3-0. Emily Sorey followed with a single and Amber Jackson with a double, allowing four more runs to cross the plate for MHS. Five batters later, with bases loaded and two outs, South hit a line drive double to right centerfield, clearing the bases and giving the girls the three runs they needed to end the game with a 10-run lead. In the victory, South was one walk shy of a perfect game. She walked the leadoff batter who was later caught in an attempt to steal second.
