Perfection! GHS 126, all opponents 2: Lady Dukes’ field hockey team finishes 16-0 regular season
The Gloucester High School varsity girls’ field hockey team closed out an amazing 2013 season on Monday with a perfect 16-0 record that includes 15 shutouts. The Dukes did not allow a goal until Hickory scored against them twice on Oct. 15. That put little tarnish on a record that now stands at 126 goals scored while only allowing two.
Gloucester had to travel to Great Bridge for its last game of the regular season on Monday, but the girls were not alone when they arrived. GHS coach Mike Miller said a crowd of fans also made the trip to back the Dukes. "We had more parents show up than Great Bridge. We’ve been very fortunate to have a great support system," Miller said.
The Gloucester girls did not disappoint and delivered a five-goal shutout to the host Wildcats. "We were really flat when we got there and we had to have a discussion," Miller said. "Then we came out and scored two quick goals. I’m still amazed, and very proud, of the way they come together as a group."
The Dukes shared their scoring opportunities and got goals from Kayla Sadler, Cassidy Goodwin, Tori Harwood, Courtnie Greene and Ashley Bohi. Goodwin also provided two assists; assists were also contributed by Simone Gayle, Sadler and Greene.
