Over $12,000 raised in Wharf to Wharf swim

Fifty-eight swimmers, some coming from as far away as Roanoke, Charlottesville, North Carolina, Northern Virginia, Maryland, Richmond and Virginia Beach, took part in Sunday’s fourth annual L. Wayne Hudgins Memorial Wharf to Wharf Swim.

Swimmers completed the 1,400-meter course across the East River, from Williams Wharf to Hicks Wharf and back. The swim was developed as an opportunity to focus on Williams Wharf’s centuries of significant maritime history.

With each swimmer expected to raise $100 minimum in sponsorships, the total raised at this year’s event was over $12,000, with late sponsorships still coming in.

Funds raised will go towards the construction of a new boathouse to be known as the William F. and Catharine K. Owens Center in honor of these major benefactors. This project will complete the planned facility of Williams Wharf Landing and enable an expansion and enhancement of programs and activities.
