MRA rowers win two races in Philadelphia
Twenty-seven Mobjack Rowing Association competitive youth rowers traveled to Philadelphia last Thursday to compete in the Independence Day Regatta held on the historic Schuylkill River race course.
Run since 1880, this year’s regatta had 1,067 boats racing in 18 time trials and 225 races to try to make one of 87 finals and the chance to win the coveted wristwatch which is awarded for a first-place finish.
Mobjack made 15 entries in 12 different events which resulted in two gold, one silver, as well as fourth-, fifth- and sixth-place finishes in the finals.
Top finishers in the women’s under 16 coxed four, Lilly Thompson, April Young, Maddy Lee, Bailey Hamilton and coxswain Brandon Smith pulled the fastest time in the heats and again in the final (7:37.81), 13.81 seconds ahead of Princeton National Rowing Association (A) with Harborside, Princeton NRA (B), Swan Creek and Pelham finishing out the field.
In the men’s junior four with cox, Phillip Machen, Kyle Moran, Tucker Blackwell, Lance South and cox Kaitlyn Thompson qualified second of 26 in the time trial, then turned in the fastest time in the semis and took gold in the finals, ahead of Princeton NRA, Penn AC, Cooper Rowing Center, Harborside and Ottawa.
