MRA rowers win three gold, silver at Philadelphia Youth Regatta
The Mobjack Rowing Association captured three gold medals and one silver at last weekend’s 17th annual Philadelphia Youth Regatta.
On Friday and Saturday, the MRA rowers took part in the regatta, which was held on the Schuylkill River. Normally a small, laid-back regatta, this year’s event was the largest in its 17-year history with almost 500 entries from 43 rowing clubs, said coach Tim Ulsaker.
Out of 97 races, Mobjack entered 21 events taking home four first-, second- and third-place heat finishes, which led to the three gold and one silver medal.
To simplify the swollen regatta, events were broken down into six-boat flights and the top three times of all flights for each event were awarded gold, silver or bronze medals. Pulling in the top gold finish, Mobjack men Phillip Machen, Kyle Moran, Tucker Blackwell, Russell Simpson and coxswain Kaitlyn Thompson won the men’s under 19-year-old four, eliminating 17 other entries with a time of 6:33.54.
Later, Machen and Moran launched in a pair to face 12 other entries and again took the gold finish with a time of 7:04.1. Blackwell and Aaron Parr took third in their men’s pair flight, netting a sixth-place overall finish. Jonathan Cooper, Simpson, Lance South, Chase Holland and cox Ashleigh Dough just missed a bronze medal in the under 17 men’s four, netting a second-place finish in their flight and fourth overall against 10 other entries. Facing 37 entries in the under 19 double, Taylor Dough with Jordan Dickey and Zach Moore with Alec Thompson took third in their flights coming in 17th and 18th respectively in the event. These two duos also combined to place 11th of 21 in the under 19 quad.
