Mobjack rowers excel at Head of the Lafayette regatta
The Mobjack Rowing Association’s fall racing program netted good results at Sunday’s 18th annual Hampton Roads Rowing Club’s Head of the Lafayette regatta, which was held at the Robertson Boat House in Norfolk.
Head racing is the cross-country version of crew, where each entry races 4,000 to 5,000 meters down a river in sequential single file to determine the best time for each category.
Mobjack rowers took gold in the men’s and women’s junior coxed four events and the women’s eight, as well as other top finishes.
First up for Mobjack were the two men’s doubles of Zach Moore/Chase Holland and Kyle Moran/Taylor Dough. The rowers placed second and third, respectively, behind a Granby entry. The MRA junior women’s doubles teams of Jamie Robins/Kaitlyn James and Mikaela Extine/Ashleigh Dough, pulled second and third behind a Great Bridge entry.
Later in the day the two girls’ doubles’ boats teamed up in a quad to take second to Granby. The two men’s doubles picked up Rachel Witt to cox them in a junior four and won gold in that event ahead of eight other entries from Virginia Beach, Granby, Great Bridge, Juniper and First Colonial. The boys’ winning time of 18:58 was also faster than the coxed fours’ collegiate and masters’ entries.
