Miller, Shackelford win regional titles

Gloucester High School sophomore Ainsley Miller and junior Joshua Shackelford won gold at the 2018 VHSL Class 5A Regional Track and Field Championships, which were held Friday and Saturday at the Gloucester High School sports complex.
Gloucester athletes excelled at the meet, which saw 15 teams and 500 athletes compete. The Gloucester girls had 10 new personal records and the boys had 18 new PRs. There were three school records broken.
In team rankings, the boys placed fifth with 48 team points, while the girls placed eighth with 35 points. Princess Anne (86 points) and Nansemond River (139 points) were the top boys’ and girls’ teams, respectively.
Miller took the regional title in the girls’ pole vault on Friday, also qualifying for the state meet as she cleared 9’0”. On Saturday, Shackelford set a school record and a PR as he took first in the boys’ 800-meter run with a time of 1:58.54.
Senior John Pryor Jr. qualified for both boys 100m dash and 200m dash finals on Friday. Pryor placed sixth overall in both races but in the 100m dash on Saturday had a new PR and state qualified with a time of 11.2 seconds.
