The Mathews High School varsity volleyball team earned three straight-set victories this past week, with wins over Tidewater District foes King and Queen and King William, and Tri-Rivers District opponent Windsor.

With the wins, the Devils improved their record to 17-3 overall; 6-0 in the Tidewater District.

The Lady Devils hosted the King William Cavaliers last Thursday in the second meeting of these two teams. Mathews showed that it was clearly the more skilled squad, controlling the tempo from the start.

The Devils took the first set with ease, with a score of 25-9. Starting the second set with a new lineup, the Devils appeared a little uncomfortable with the change, but still kept the set under control, winning 25-16. In the final set, the Devils simply shut down the Cavs in a 25-11 victory.

"Even though King William didn’t pose any threat, we stayed controlled and focused on the basics of the game" commented junior defensive specialist Anna Hudgins. Rachel Close led the Devils from the back with 11 digs, followed by Hailey Abernathy with seven and Mackenzie Moughon with six. Leading the offense was Moughon with 12 kills and Maddie McCann with six. Shelby Ware acquired 18 assists for the night. Maddie McCann led the team in aces with four, followed closely by Ware with three.
