MHS volleyball, defending state champion, has high hopes for season

After having such an incredible and memorable season as the Lady Devils had last year, the Mathews High School varsity volleyball team is looking to come out again this year and show that it refuses to let up.

In 2011, MHS capped a perfect 29-0 season by winning the Group A, Division 2 state championship. The girls hope to keep the success of last season in the back of their minds and use it to fuel and energize their play this year.

The team’s high expectations will be put to the test this weekend, when the Lady Devils host the annual Mathews Volleyball Jamboree.

As head coach Pat Moughon enters her 14th season, she has high expectations for her newly formed team. She started the season with the foundation of last year’s squad, losing only two to graduation, and picking up three new players.

Joining the team this year are freshman Brittany Mitchem, sophomore Sophie Bondurko, and junior Kayla Carter. Returning players from last year’s state championship squad are sophomore Kai McCann, juniors Hailey Abernathy, Anna Hudgins, Hannah Rowe, Jacqueline Stewart, and Whitney Eriksen, and five seniors—Amber Burruss, Rachel Close, Maddie McCann, Mackenzie Moughon and Shelby Ware.
