The Mathews High School varsity girls’ basketball team picked up a pair of key Tidewater District wins this week, beating West Point and Middlesex, to claim first place in the standings.

The Lady Devils traveled to West Point Saturady and left the gym with an impressive victory, 38-21. Mathews was able to gain the victory after previously losing to the Lady Pointers a few weeks ago. The Lady Devils came out on fire, ending the first half with a 19-8 lead. Having all the momentum, Mathews never relinquished on either end of the court to gain the victory.

Taylor Denton had a great night, leading the team with 14 points. Jessi Nelson and Shelby Ware followed behind with seven points apiece. Savanna Wooten and Mackenzie Moughon each dropped three points, while Taylor South and Emily Brown each chipped in two.

On Monday night, the team honored its graduating class for Senior Night. Senior players Shelby Ware, Mackenzie Moughon, Taylor Denton, Jessi Nelson and manager/scorekeeper Jennie Diggs were recognized in a ceremony before the game.

Mathews was facing its rival Middlesex in the pressure-filled game, and the winner would take sole possession of first place in the cstrict.
