MHS track teams place seventh, 10th at KW
The Mathews High School boys’ and girls’ track teams traveled to King William High School on Saturday to face off against 12 other schools from throughout the region in the Cavaliers’ second invitational and the Devils’ first meet after returning from spring break.
Despite some intense competition from such schools as Amelia County, Massaponax, Henrico, West Point and King William, the teams fought hard to take home a 10th place finish for the girls, with 14.33 points, and a seventh place spot for the boys, with 44.5 points.
For the girls, freshman Shyanne Gordon brought in three points for the girls with eighth and seventh place finishes in the 100m and 300m hurdles, respectively, as well as qualifying for next month’s regional tournament.
Senior Jessie Nelson also managed a fifth place finish in the high jump, with a height of 4’08", bringing in four points. Freshman Tracy Green pulled off a tie for eighth, with a height of 4’04" in the high jump, as well as 12th in the triple jump, going 26’06". Newly-minted captain Sabrina Myers pointed in the 1600m run with a time of 6:30 and eighth place. In addition, the girls’ relay teams captured six points overall with sixth place finishes in both the 4x100m (1:01.04) and 4x400 (5:08.07).
