MHS soccer closes season with 8-7-1 record
The Mathews High School varsity soccer team closed out its 2013 season as the Tidewater District tournament runners-up, posting an 8-7-1 record for the young squad.
After upsetting the King William Cavaliers to earn a spot in the district finals, Mathews fell 4-2 to the reigning district champions from West Point in the May 22 season finale.
The Pointers scored some early goals, putting the Devils in a hole. In the latter part of the game, the Devils were able to pick up the intensity and took repeated shots at the Pointers’ goal. Junior Kelly Nelson made the first Mathews goal, followed by another by junior P.J. Johnson.
