MHS rowers excel at first home regatta
Mathews High School rowers did quite well in the team’s first outing of 2014, winning nine races on Saturday in the first of three home regattas at Williams Wharf Landing.
Saturday’s regatta, the smallest of the three, saw competition from two Maryland schools—DeMatha Catholic High School in Hyattsville and Elizabeth Seaton in Bladensburg—as well as Great Bridge from Chesapeake and the Blue Devils’ next-door neighbors, the Gloucester High School crew.
The first MHS crew to strike gold was the men’s varsity four, completing the 1,500-meter race in 4:29, 10 seconds ahead of second-place DeMatha. The next Mathews victory was a combined Mathews/Gloucester novice/freshman eight that beat Elizabeth Seaton in a head-to-head competition.
Mathews rowers took all three places in the men’s double, with the MHS A boat posting a time of 3:37 for the 1K course. The B and C boats also beat Gloucester and two entries from Great Bridge.
First-place wins were also posted in the women’s single, the women’s straight quad, the men’s single, the women’s double, the men’s straight quad and the final race of the day, the mixed varsity eight.
Mathews rowers will head up to Occoquan this weekend to take part in the Darrell Winslow Regatta. The following Saturday, April 19, MHS will host its Tidewater Crews Regatta.
