MHS moves to next level: Blue Devils host William Campbell in quarterfinals Saturday
Mathews High School varsity football players advanced in the Group A Eastern Section Division 1 playoffs Friday with a 42-28 win over visiting Surry. The second-seeded Blue Devils (10-1) will continue post-season play with a host of 10th seed William Campbell (4-7) at 2 p.m. Saturday in the sectional quarterfinals.
Chris Davis led the Mathews effort on Friday, carrying the ball 16 times for a total of 164 yards and four touchdowns to increase his single-season TD record to 31. James Pavik tallied 127 yards on 17 rushes and had a seven-yard reception, while Jacob Green rushed six times for 23 yards. Pavik and Green also had touchdowns in the win.
Davis got the Blue Devils on the board first when he capped a drive with a four-yard scoring run and Tyler Tillman’s point after was good for a 7-0 lead. Surry responded with its own first quarter TD, scoring on a 15-yard pass play, but Davis answered with a 75-yard kickoff return to make it 14-6.
Davis slipped away from Surry again early in the second quarter, this time going 80 yards for a touchdown. He scored his fourth TD on a short run just before halftime to increase the Mathews lead to 28-6.
