MHS jayvees open volleyball season
As the junior varsity coach for the Mathews High School volleyball program, coach Tina Reece has never had a more difficult decision with making cuts.
She had 30 girls try out for the program, and is only allowed to keep 15. Starting this season, nine players returned from last year’s squad, to which she added six new players. Returning are Kelly Adams, Kayla Carter, Bailey Kujawski, Nikkita Parrish, Morgan Driskell, Taylor South, Haley Sullivan, Mallory Sanger and Allison Foster. The new players are Brittany Mitchem, Sophia Bondurko, Mariah Robins, Madison Jones, Shelby Ethington and Stacy Abernathy.
The Lady Devils started off the season strong against Lafayette on Aug. 24. As a team they served aggressively and consistently, showed good technique, and came together well on the court. The Devils took their first victory against the Rams, 25-16 and 25-17. As their season continued with a scrimmage against New Kent on the following day, it gave coach Reece a chance to work the girls in different places, and gave them a chance to prove themselves. Since it was a scrimmage, they played all three games where they usually only play best two out of three. All of the girls got to see their skills shine in that match.
