MHS golfer qualifies for state tournament
Mathews High School golfer Jacob Jackson finished fifth in Monday’s Region A tournament, which was held at Quinton Oaks Golf Course near Callao.
Jackson was one of two MHS players to qualify for regional play, with Corbin Smith turning in 23rd place in the competition, according to Blue Devil golf coach Nick Naglieri.
"On the whole, the Mathews golf season didn’t go as I had figured it would go," Naglieri said. "I had thought that King William would win the district, which they did—in fact they won the region—but I thought for sure we would finish second and have the whole team go to regional play; however as they say, that’s why you play the game."
During the regular season, the Devil golfers showed they could compete by beating Middlesex twice and giving King William a fight. "We even hung close with the other powerhouses of Lancaster and Essex," Naglieri said. Mathews did not qualify as a team did not place in the top two in the district meet.
