MHS girls win three straight
The Mathews High School girls’ basketball team got on a hot streak this week, winning three games in a row, including two against Tidewater District foes.
The Lady Devils traveled to Middlesex last Thursday, beating the Chargers, 42-35, after trailing at the half, 10-17. In the second half, Mathews started to attack the basket more instead of shooting jump shots and getting the Chargers in foul trouble. Of the 37 foul shots taken by Mathews, 30 attempts were in the second half, including 18 in the final quarter. Mathews took a two-point deficit into the fourth quarter, but outscored Middlesex, 21-12, in the final period to take the win.
Mackenzie Moughon and Shanice Williams led Mathews with eight and seven points respectively, followed by Shelby Ware with six points while Savanna Wooten and Taylor Denton added five points each. Lexus Walton contributed four points, Taylor South added three, and Whitney Eriksen and Hannah Rowe chipped in two points each.
Mathews returned home on Saturday and turned the tide on their Eastern Shore opponents from Nandua. Mathews started strong and played consistent throughout the contest, pushing a 19-13 halftime lead to defeat the Lady Warriors by a 37-25 final margin.
Ware controlled the offensive and defensive boards for the Lady Blue Devils, leading the team with 13 points. South added six points while Emily Brown and Denton scored five points each. Rowe followed close behind with four points while Wooten added two. Williams and Moughon rounded out the scoring with one point each.
