The Mathews High School varsity volleyball team earned a pair of victories during the past week, including a thrilling five-set match win over AA York High School on Monday night.

Last Thursday, the Lady Devils hosted Northumberland for the second time this season, and the Devils knew to expect a strong defense, but weak offense.

MHS dispatched the Indians in three quick sets, holding Northumberland to fewer than 15 points in each, 25-10, 25-14 and 25-14. The Devils demonstrated precise passing, impeccable setting and dominating offense. As a team, MHS earned 10 aces, 31 assists, 38 kills, six blocks, and 25 digs.

Mathews traveled to York on Monday to face the tough Bay Rivers District opponent and, in spite of inconsistent play, came out on top in a hard-fought match.

The Devils dropped the first set, 21-25, due to unforced errors. They came back and won the second set, 28-26, after being able to overcome a deficit in the beginning of the set. In the third, the Devils came up short, 17-25.
