MHS girls post wins over Lafayette, New Kent and Windsor
The Mathews High School varsity volleyball team played back-to-back nights with the Lafayette Rams and New Kent Trojans. The Lady Devils were scheduled to play Lafayette Tuesday, Aug. 23, but because of the earthquake, the game was moved to the following evening.
This match was the Devils’ first real game, in which they swept the Rams, 3-0, winning by scores of 25-19, 25-14 and 25-7.
The Devils played well against the Rams, with good passing which led to a quick offense. The kill leader for the Devils was Maddie McCann with 13, followed by Mackenzie Moughon with eight, Kacie Austin with five, Amber Burruss with four and Teeny Robbins with three. Shelby Ware had 21 assists. The ace leader was Moughon with five, followed by McCann with four. Rachel Close held up the back row with eight digs and precision serve receive passing.
The next night, the Devils faced off against the Trojans in a scrimmage. "My goal for the girls was to play hard against a good team," said head coach Pat Moughon. "They performed well under pressure, proving themselves as they came out on top."
