MHS girls pick up three more volleyball wins

In back-to-back matches last week, the Mathews High School varsity volleyball team defeated Northern Neck District foes Essex and Lancaster with ease, beating both in straight sets.

Against Essex last Wednesday, the Devils never let the Trojans score more than 13 points, as Mathews won by scores of 25-12, 25-12 and 25-13.

The following night, MHS dispatched Lancaster in similar fashion, winning 25-9, 25-17 and 25-19.

Between the two matches, Maddie McCann led the Blue Devils in serving with nine aces, followed by Shelby Ware, Hannah Rowe, Moughon and Kai McCann with two each, and Amber Burruss with one.

Maddie McCann also led the Devils with 21 kills for the two matches followed by Moughon with 20, Kai McCann and Anna Hudgins each with four, Burruss with three, and Ware and Kayla Carter with two apiece. Hudgins led the MHS defense with 13 digs, followed by Ware and Whitney Eriksen each with eight, Hailey Abernathy and Moughon with seven, Maddie McCann with six, and Rowe and Kai McCann with three each.

Jacqueline Stewart led the Devils with four blocks, followed closely by Rowe with three. Ware gained another 23 assists.
