MHS girls in fight for state tournament berth
The Mathews High School varsity girls’ basketball team travels to Sussex Central tonight for a regional semifinal game, where the Lady Devils will fight for a bid to the state championships beginning March 8 at the Siegel Center in Richmond.
Mathews advanced to tonight’s semifinal game after upsetting Lancaster in Tuesday night’s Region A opener, 40-36. In the Tidewater District tournament, Mathews defeated West Point in last Wednesday’s opening round, 45-41, but fell to Middlesex on Friday night in the title game, 35-27.
The Lady Devils started off strong in post-season play against the visiting Pointers. Mathews dominated West Point, taking a 10-point lead into halftime. In the second half, the Devils’ defense began to fall apart and the Lady Pointers took advantage.
In the final minutes, Mathews was able to escape a flurry of West Point three pointers and held off the late rally by the visitors to capture the win. Kaitlin Eriksen led the Devils with 13 points. Following behind her were Taylor Denton with eight, and Shelby Ware, Mackenzie Moughon and Angela Sale with five points apiece. Rounding out the scoring was Lindsey Brown with four points, Sydney Morgan and Samera Thomas with two points each and Jessi Nelson with one point.
