MHS girls exact revenge on Northumberland
The Mathews High School volleyball team continues to improve its record, beating both Northumberland and Rappahannock in a pair of home games. Supported by a packed gym and spirited student section, Mathews welcomed the Lady Indians of Northumberland last Thursday.
The Lady Blue Devils rode the home court advantage to avenge their previous loss, beating the visitors in four sets: 28-26, 25-19, 23-25 and 25-12. The defeat was the first loss for the Lady Indians.
Leading the team in kills was Kai McCann having 13, followed by Jacqueline Stewart with nine, Hannah Rowe and Kayla Carter with five, and Brittany Mitchem, Keely Crittenden and Mariah Robinson with one each. McCann served four aces, while Anna Hudgins had two, and Rowe and Stewart each had one. Rowe and McCann led the team with digs having 18 and 15, respectively. Hailey Abernathy followed with 10, Hudgins had eight, Crittenden and Sophie Bandurco had six each, Stewart had four, and Carter had two. Bandurco and Crittenden contributed 15 and 14 sets, respectively.

hannock Raiders, sweeping the visitors in three sets by scores of 26-24, 25-21 and 25-11. Leading the team with kills was Stewart with five, McCann, Carter and Mitchem contributed three, Rowe had two, and Robinson and Whitney Eriksen added one each. McCann had three aces while Rowe, Eriksen, and Hudgins each had one. Hudgins led the team with digs with eight, followed by Abernathy and Rowe with five each, and Stewart and McCann with four each. Robinson, Kelly Adams and Crittenden contributed two each, and Eriksen, Allison Foster, Morgan Driskell, Bandurco and Mitchem each had one. Bandurco had 10 assists, Crittenden had seven, and Hudgins had one.
