The Mathews High School varsity volleyball team earned its third win of the season on Tuesday, beating Northern Neck District foe Northumberland in three straight sets, 25-19, 25-16 and 25-13.

The visiting Devils were a little shaken up in the second set after libero Rachel Close went down with an ankle injury, but junior defensive specialist Anna Hudgins stepped up to fill in. Hudgins did a great job in an experience she described as "exhilarating and intense." Hudgins had nine digs, an ace, and a kill in the remaining two sets.

Maddie McCann led the Devils’ offense with 15 kills, followed by Mackenzie Moughon with 13, Kai McCann with three, and Close and Shelby Ware with two each. Moughon and Maddie McCann led in service aces with two each followed by Hannah Rowe and Ware with one each.

Following Hudgins, Moughon had eight digs, Maddie McCann contributed five, Close and Hailey Abernathy each had three and Ware ended the night with two. Ware also collected 32 assists for the night, Sophie Bandurco had two, and each of the McCann sisters contributed one.

"I saw players on this team step up in ways I have never seen before," senior outside hitter Maddie McCann commented. "I am proud of the way we played as a team instead of individuals. Even with the odds against us at times, we played a great game and brought home a win."

Jayvee Devils

Meanwhile, the MHS jayvee volleyball team suffered its first defeat, losing a hard-fought match Tuesday night to the Northumberland Indians.
