The Mathews High School varsity football team fell to 0-5 following Friday’s 42-6 loss to Colonial Beach. A score right before halftime seemed to let the air out of the tires for the visiting Devils.

"It was 8-0 with less than 30 seconds to play in the first half and we gave up a touchdown on fourth down and went into halftime (trailing) 16-0 and had to kick off," said MHS head coach Paul White.

"Colonial Beach runs the unbalanced single wing, which requires assignment football on defense," White said. "We held them to fourth down on five different occasions, but every person on defense must do their assignment for it to work."

Dayshon Williamson was the leading ground gainer for Mathews, picking up 64 yards on 18 carries. He also scored the Devils’ only points of the game, a touchdown early in the fourth quarter. Fellow running back A.J. White rushed for 18 yards on eight carries, and also had two receptions for 15 yards. Josh Wilson added two more receptions for 18 yards. MHS quarterback Ryan Ewell was 4-for-9 in passing for 33 yards.
