Mathews tennis improves to 5-1
The Mathews High School girls’ tennis team earned a 7-2 win last week over AA opponent, New Kent. Even with the Lady Devils’ number-two seed Amy Collins out due to illness, the team cruised through the match, which was held on March 28.
In singles, top-seeded Morgan Sears, who was also under the weather, lost to Sam Courrier, 8-0. Stepping up to the number two position, Aly Collins easily won her match, 8-1, over Caroline Evelyn. Rachel Byrd, playing number three, also easily won defeating her opponent Kaitlyn McSweeney, 8-1.
Fourth-seed Jamie Ramsey kept the Devil streak going with an 8-2 win against Kristy Galloway. Kasey Lynn Lyerly bumped up to number five and won her match against Cassie Dram, 8-4. Playing number six, Mallory Hurst had little trouble defeating Galday Cook, 8-1.
