Thanks in large measure to Chris Davis’s 257 rushing yards, the Mathews High School varsity football team completely dominated the Middlesex Chargers last Thursday night, 51-14.

The junior running back was all but unstoppable as he scored touchdowns on runs of 15, 1 and 36 yards.

In spite of the lopsided final score, Middlesex did present a serious challenge to the Devils, especially late in the second quarter. Trailing 24-0 with less than five minutes until halftime, the Chargers connected on a 40-yard touchdown pass and, on the ensuing kickoff, pooch kicked it over the Devils’ front line, recovering the ball and quickly converting it to a second score and a two-point conversion to narrow the gap to 24-14 at the half.
