Mathews picks up three key district wins
The Mathews High School varsity softball team picked up three key wins to improve its Tidewater District record to 5-0. The Lady Devils defeated West Point twice and Middlesex once in a busy week on the diamond.
Last Thursday, the MHS girls traveled to West Point to face the Pointers for the first time this season. After a somewhat slow start, Mathews bats came alive in the top of the sixth, scoring five runs to beat the Pointers, 10-0.
Lindsay Crigler was on the mound for five innings and pitched a perfect game, not allowing any players from West Point to reach base. Lindsay Collins came in the sixth inning and shut down the Lady Pointers to end the game.
Crigler led Mathews in hitting going 4-for-4 at the plate. Amanda Greene, Taylor Denton, Virginia Scatchard and Sharese Jarvis each had two hits and Kaitlin Eriksen, Lindsay Collins, Sydney Morgan and Sarah Burnette contributed one hit apiece.
Mathews traveled Friday to Middlesex for one of the Devils’ most important games of the season. While both teams stranded runners in the first three innings, Mathews finally got on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth, converting Crigler’s leadoff double into a score by pinch-runner Sydney James. Middlesex responded with a run, but Mathews took charge with five more runs, with the help of Charger errors, to win, 6-1.
