Mathews JV record now at 3-2
The Mathews High School junior varsity baseball team has compiled a 3-2 record in the opening weeks of play, with recent victories over Rappahannock and Northumberland.
Mathews split a doubleheader at home against Rappahannock last Thursday. Brandon Williams started on the mound in the first game for the Blue Devils, allowing one hit and three walks. Cody Tunstall relieved Williams in the third inning with runners on first and second with no outs.
Although both inherited runners scored, none of the batters that faced Tunstall made it home until the fifth inning when a leadoff single followed by a walk and another single allowed the Raiders a walk-off 3-2 victory. Williams scored off a sacrifice bunt by Payton Blake, Ethan Armistead on an errant throw to the plate trying to get Williams out.
Jalen Matthews pitched two and two thirds innings in game two against the Raiders. He struck out three, walked one and allowed no hits. Hunter Hudgins was flawless as he set up closer James Cook. Cook walked a batter who scored off a fielder’s choice in the fourth inning. He got three strikeouts in the fifth to hold Rappahannock to one run. Armistead, Mason Fiscella, Chad Lewis and Tunstall all had hits to help the Blue Devils to win the nightcap, 9-1.
