Mathews clinches top seed in tournament
Six seniors on the Mathews High School varsity volleyball team closed their regular season careers last Wednesday with a convincing straight-set victory against Middlesex. The Lady Blue Devils defeated the visiting Lady Chargers, 25-4, 25-22 and 25-17.
With the win, Mathews enters the Conference 42 tournament as the #1 seed. Mathews was scheduled to host King and Queen last night, with West Point facing Middlesex in the other semifinal. If Mathews wins, the Lady Devils will host the winner of the Pointers-Chargers game tonight.
Seniors Hailey Abernathy, Kayla Carter, Whitney Eriksen, Anna Hudgins, Hannah Rowe and Jacqueline Stewart were honored along with their parents by head coach Pat Moughon and the home crowd. During last Wednesday night’s ceremony, it was announced that the senior class had compiled an overall record of 103 wins against only eight losses during the past four years.
The seniors then combined with their teammates to thoroughly dominate Middlesex in the contest. Leading the team in kills was Hudgins with seven while Carter added six and Rowe had three. Kai McCann added two kills while Eriksen, Stewart, Sophie Bandurco, Keely Crittenden and Mariah Robinson had one kill each. Bandurco, Crittenden, Rowe and Hudgins combined for 21 assists. Rowe led the team with seven digs, followed by Hudgins with six and Eriksen with five. Abernathy and Crittenden added four digs each while Stewart added two and Robinson and Allison Foster contributed one dig each.
Crittenden and Rowe served two aces each while Stewart added one.
