Mathews 2-0 after 37-12 win over Raiders
The week before, Chris Davis scored a touchdown on the opening kickoff to set the tone for that game. On the first play from scrimmage Friday, it was Jared Inge who would put Mathews on the path to victory.
On Rappahannock’s first snap, the senior defensive end astutely scooped up a lateral pass and took it 37 yards for the score as the Mathews varsity football team defeated the visiting Raiders, 37-12, to boost the Devils’ record to 2-0.
Mathews led throughout Friday’s game, although Rappahannock did put together a solid drive late in the first quarter that culminated in a 1-yard touchdown run by running back William Hawkins. The Raiders wouldn’t return to the Blue Devil end zone until less than a minute left to play, long after head coach Paul White began putting in his second-string players.
Chris Davis had a big night for the Devils. The senior back rushed for 227 yards and scored on touchdown runs of 3 and 20 yards. He shared rushing duties with James Pavik, who scored the Devils’ first offensive TD, diving in from inside the 1-yard line. Pavik was also a major factor on defense as a linebacker, taking part in 18 tackles.
Pavik was the MVP for the Devils in the 41st annual Mathews Ruritan Bowl. Senior tight end/defensive lineman Kevin Barnes won the honor for the Raiders. Club president Dan Reno presented the trophies at the conclusion of the game.
Deondre Foster scored the other Mathews touchdown, a 28-yard reception on a fourth-and-long pass from quarterback Ryan Ewell.
