Lady Dukes win district soccer title
Gloucester High beat Denbigh, 2-0, Tuesday to stay ahead of Woodside and take the regular season Peninsula District girls’ soccer title. The Lady Dukes ended the regular season with no losses and one tie, while the Wolverines closed out at 7-0-2. The PD Tournament begins Wednesday in the Gloucester High School stadium.
GHS coach Bob Fisher had high praise for his young team, which has a 22-member roster that includes 18 freshmen and sophomores. "I am proud of their work ethic throughout the season and how they collectively rose to the challenge each week. A great example of effort being rewarded," Fisher said following Tuesday’s win.
Mary Williams put Gloucester on the scoreboard with a breakaway goal in the first half against the Patriots. In the second half, Williams passed to Maegan Beck who made it 2-0. Denbigh fought for scores but was thwarted by goalkeeper Cheyenne Hogge who had 11 saves, including one on a penalty kick.
The Dukes faced off with the Wolverines on Friday in Newport News and played to a 1-1 tie. Gloucester got on the board first when Williams netted a corner kick from Carrie Adams seven minutes into the game. At keeper, Hogge had two saves to preserve the 1-0 advantage in the first half.
