The Gloucester High School varsity softball team had its 2013 season opener at Bethel High School rained out Tuesday but the Lady Dukes were expected to meet the Bruins either yesterday or today. The Dukes will hold their home opener on Friday against Heritage and welcome Bethel on Tuesday, with both games starting at 4:30 p.m.

Makayla Jenkins, a senior left-hander, will pitch for Gloucester this season. Jenkins was 12-2 last year and earned All Eastern Region honors. Seniors Noodle Allen and Gabby Zarichny will be in right field and at third base, respectively.

Sophomore Shelby Alto will again get the start in centerfield and sophomore Alissa Upton will begin the season at second base. Both played key roles in the Dukes’ 22-2 season last year.

Five freshmen will have ample opportunities to play this year. Devon Smith at catcher, Morgan Haywood at first base and on the mound, Alyssa Shackelford at shortstop, Macy Robins in left field and Tori Brown as the designated hitter and at second base should play significant roles this season, according to Gloucester head coach Red Lindsay.
