Lady Dukes’ season ends in conference semifinals
The Dukes played well defensively but could not hold off the Hawks’ offense after issuing 13 walks. Freshman Kayla Tobin (1-2), who pitched brilliantly in the 4-1 quarterfinal win over Indian River, struggled with control and was relieved by Shelby Alto in the fifth inning after suffering a lower leg injury.
Gloucester cut a 6-0 lead to 6-2 but could not push any more runs across when opportunities were presented. Alto led the Dukes offensively with three hits while Macy Robbins had two hits and an RBI. Morgan Haywood and Kalen Johnson each contributed a hit.
Alto, a junior, recorded the 100th hit of her career with a single to lead off the game. The left-handed hitter lined the second pitch of the game to left field for the first of her three hits in the loss. She joins 11 other former Dukes who recorded 100 or more hits in their high school careers.
