Lady Dukes in second place in district
The Gloucester High School varsity softball team is 4-1 in early season play and currently in second place in Peninsula District standings.
The Dukes pounded Hampton 19-0 on the Crabbers’ field on Saturday. Shelby Alto, Macy Robbins, Tori Brown and Makayla Jenkins each contributed three hits to the Gloucester win.
Jenkins pitched four innings, striking out seven batters and allowing only one hit, and smacked a fifth-inning grand slam. Gabby Zarichny and Morgan Haywood added two hits apiece for the Dukes, and Haywood pitched the fifth inning to finish the shutout.
Gloucester bounced back from a loss for a big 2-0 win over Kecoughtan on Friday. Jenkins pitched a one-hitter with nine strikeouts. Alto led off the game with a double and later scored on a passed ball for a quick 1-0 advantage. The Dukes upped the lead to 2-0 on a long solo home run by Jenkins in the fourth inning.
Following a one-out error in the first inning, Jenkins sat down 14 straight batters before running into trouble in the sixth. After an error and a strikeout, the Warriors recorded their only hit to put runners on the corners. Jenkins calmly struck out the number two and three hitters to end the threat.
