Lady Dukes improve to 3-0
The Gloucester High School varsity softball team improved to 3-0 in Peninsula District standings after slipping by Bethel, 3-1, on Tuesday. On the mound, Taylor Distefano gave up three hits and an unearned run while striking out seven with no walks.
The Dukes jumped out to a three-run lead in the top of the first inning when Hannah Joyce led off with a double and later scored on a passed ball. With two outs, Makayla Jenkins doubled and then scored on a single from Kasey Von Engle. Coleen Lemay, running for Von Engle, scored on an error for a three-run inning and what would be the final scoring for Gloucester.
The Dukes gave up an unearned run in the bottom of the first to make it 3-1. From there, Distefano retired the next 15 batters before giving up a lead-off double in the seventh inning. That hope for the Bruins was short-lived when the runner tried to stretch it into a triple and was tagged out. Later, with a runner on first and two outs, Distefano ended the game on a called third strike.
The Dukes routed Hampton, 28-0, Friday in their first home game of the season. Jenkins pitched a no-hitter, striking out 12 of 15 batters with no walks. At the plate, she contributed a long, three-run home run and had four RBIs on the day.
