With wins over Tidewater District foes Middlesex and West Point, the Mathews High School varsity volleyball team improved to 4-0 in the district; 15-3 overall.

On Tuesday, Mathews hosted Middlesex in the Lady Devils’ second annual Dig Pink match for breast cancer awareness. Both teams honored survivors from the community and remembered those no longer with us.

The Devils had a number of fundraisers with all profits going to the Dig Pink Foundation starting with a pink-themed baked sale, breast cancer novelties, and a number of raffles which will continue throughout October.

Inspired by the large crowd, MHS came out strong, beating the visiting Chargers, 25-9, 25-13, and 25-10.

Leading the Devils’ defense was Rachel Close with nine digs and impeccable passing. Mackenzie Moughon and Maddie McCann followed with nine digs each, and they were trailed by Whitney Eriksen and Hannah Rowe with three each, and Anna Hudgins, Shelby Ware and Kai McCann with two apiece. Moughon led the offense with 12 kills, trailed by Maddie McCann with nine, Jacqueline Stewart with two, and Kai McCann, Rowe, Hudgins, Eriksen, Kayla Carter and Brittany Mitchem with one each.

Ware collected 16 assists and Sophie Bandurco had four. Ware and Maddie McCann earned two blocks.

Mathews also picked up a straight-set win last Thursday against West Point. After three days of straight practice, an unusual thing during regular season play, the Devils were ready for action. They started off rather slow, appearing stiff and struggling somewhat, but eventually won, 25-18, 25-18 and 25-15.

Maddie McCann led MHS with 18 kills, followed by Moughon with nine, Kai McCann with three, and Rowe, Carter and Mitchem with two each, and Amber Burruss, Stewart, Eriksen, Ware and Hailey Abernathy with one each. Maddie McCann also led the Devils in aces with two, while Burruss, Hudgins and Ware each had one. Ware collected 24 assists followed by Bandurco with three. Hudgins led the Devils’ defense with nine digs, followed by Maddie McCann with eight, Eriksen with four, Abernathy and Moughon with four each, Ware with two and Burruss with one. Ware stood strong on the front row with two blocks, along with Stewart, Maddie McCann, Kai McCann and Carter, who ended the night with one block each.
