Lady Devils win title
The Mathews High School varsity softball team became Conference 42 champions with victories over Charles City and Middlesex in the conference tournament last week.
MHS traveled to William Campbell last night for a regional semifinal game. If the Lady Devils win, they will play in the regional final game Friday and are guaranteed a spot in next week’s state tournament.
Mathews faced Charles City in round one of the tournament last Wednesday. The Lady Devils easily defeated the visiting Panthers by a score of 15-0 in five innings. Mathews batted .565 as a team, going 13-23 at the plate.
Standouts included Taylor South (2-for-2, single, double, walk), Madison South (2-for-2, single, double), Lexie Miles (single, triple, walk, two RBIs). Bailey Kujawski, Hunter Thomas, and Kelly Adams were each 1-for-1 at the plate. M. South threw the complete, five-inning no-hitter. She surrendered two walks while striking out 11 of the 17 Charles City batters she faced.
On Friday, Mathews played Middlesex in the conference championship game. The Devils won the contest, 11-1, in another five-inning game due to the slaughter rule. Adams pitched the first three innings, giving up three hits and no walks while striking out six. Madison Owens pitched the remaining two innings, giving up no hits and no walks while striking out two. Owens led the Devils at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two singles, a triple, a walk, and two RBIs. T. South and Amanda Miller were each 1-for-1 with a single.
