Lady Devils split pair; face two opponents next week
The Mathews High School varsity softball team split a pair of games this past week, rolling over Charles City last Wednesday by an 18-0 margin, and losing a 2-0 affair the following night against King William. The Lady Devils currently hold a 4-5 record.
In the Charles City game, Madison South pitched all five innings of the contest that was shortened due to the slaughter rule. South struck out nine Panther batters while allowing no walks and giving up one hit. The Charles City second baseman who hit an infield single to short in the fifth inning with one out was the only Panther batter to reach base.
South also led the Devils’ offense, going 3-for-3 at the plate with an inside-the-park home run, two bunt singles, and two RBIs. Other offensive standouts for Mathews included Hunter Thomas (2-for-3, two singles), Madison Owens (2-for-3, double, single), Taylor South (2-for-3, double, single), Lexie Miles (2-for-4, double, single), and Savanna Wooten (2-for-4, two singles). Amanda Miller and Keely Crittenden each added a single.
