Lady Devils pick up four more wins
The Mathews High School varsity softball team earned four more victories this past week, shutting out King William last Thursday to open the Tidewater District season, edging Northumberland by an 8-5 margin on Friday and winning two games against Richmond-area foes.
Last Thursday, Mathews broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third inning, scoring four runs against King William on a walk and four base hits. That proved to be enough as MHS pitcher Lindsay Crigler dominated the Cavalier offense, allowing only two hits, one walk and no runs.
Sharese Jarvis, Kaitlin Eriksen, Virginia Scatchard, Lindsay Collins, Sydney Morgan, Sarah Burnette and Amanda Greene each had one hit.
On Friday, Mathews took an early 2-0 lead and never gave it up to defeat the homestanding Northumberland Indians, 8-5.
Crigler led the Devils with two hits. Scatchard, Collins, Sammi Rutter and Kayla Robins had one hit each.
On Tuesday Mathews traveled to Richmond to play AAA Henrico and Trinity Episcopal. Mathews had little trouble with Henrico, winning 10-0. By the top of the fifth, Mathews was up, 9-0, and needed one more run to end the game by the mercy rule.
In the sixth inning, Henrico tried to a rally, but the Devils’ defense held them with runners on second and third to continue the shutout. In the bottom of sixth inning Mathews plated its final run to win the game.
