Lady Devils improve to 20-0 in volleyball
The Mathews High School varsity volleyball team picked up three more victories during the past week over King William, Windsor and King and Queen, to increase the team’s record to 20-0. The Blue Devils switched to pink in Monday night’s game against Windsor, raising money and awareness about breast cancer.
Last Thursday, Mathews traveled to King William to defeat the Cavaliers in three straight sets, by scores of 25-19, 25-7 and 25-11.
Rachel Close led the team with three aces and 13 digs. Kacie Austin had one ace, one assist, two kills and a dig. Teeny Robbins had one ace, two kills and three digs. Amber Burruss had seven assists and a dig.
Mackenzie Moughon had 10 kills, one assist, four digs and one solo block. Shelby Ware had 17 assists, two kills, two digs and one solo block. Hailey Abernathy had one kill and six digs. Maddie McCann had 13 kills and six digs. Hannah Rowe had three kills and a block. Whitney Eriksen had two aces and two digs. Anna Hudgins had two aces and four digs. Jackie Stewart had 10 assists for the night, and Kai McCann had six kills, two digs, and a block.
In Monday night’s first-ever "Dig Pink" game to support breast cancer research, Mathews invited cancer survivors to join them at the match and honored them before the Windsor game.
They had many fundraisers going on during the game including a 50/50 raffle, player sponsorships, breast cancer items for sale and pink baked goods for purchase. The baked goods and raffles will be held all month long. A prize was given to the spectator wearing the most pink: Anne Carole Daniels won free admission and a free meal from the concession stand. The fundraising will be going on all month long as well.
The Pink Devils rose to the occasion to defeat Windsor in three straight sets. However, it wasn’t a simple task as they just got by the Dukes with scores of 25-22, 25-12 and 29-27.
Maddie McCann had a team-leading 17 kills, followed by Moughon (10 kills), Robbins (five), Austin (four), Kai McCann (four) and Rowe (one). Ware was credited with 33 assists for the night. Moughon led the team with in serving with four aces, followed by Austin, Robbins and Close with two each, and Burruss and Ware with one apiece.
Maddie McCann had 15 digs, followed by Close with 14, Austin with seven, Moughon with four, Robbins with two and Abernathy with one. Rowe dominated the net with three blocks, followed by Robbins with one.
The following night, the Lady Devils had a relatively easy time against the visiting King and Queen Tigers, winning by scores of 25-7, 25-13 and 25-17. Robbins led the offense with 10 kills, followed by Kai McCann with eight, Stewart and Eriksen with four, and Rowe and Hudgins with two.
