Lady Devils improve to 17-0
The Mathews High School varsity volleyball team improved to a perfect 17-0 overall and 4-0 in the district with wins this past week over Tidewater District foes West Point and Middlesex.
The Lady Devils defeated the visiting Pointers last Thursday in three straight sets, 25-10, 25-16 and 25-9. Highlights of the match include Whitney Eriksen’s five aces, Mackenzie Moughon’s eight kills, Shelby Ware’s 18 assists and Rachel Close’s three digs.

Mathews took the first two sets by scores of 25-17 and 25-7. In the third set, Mathews had difficulty in its passing game, losing by a 26-24 margin. Mathews and Middlesex played down to the wire in the fourth set, but the Devils prevailed, 28-26.
Moughon led the Devils in kills racking up 19 on the night, followed closely by Maddie McCann with 17, with Austin (six kills), Robbins (four) and Rowe (one) trailing. Ware had a team-leading 43 assists. Moughon, Close and McCann anchored the defense with 24, 22 and 16 digs, respectively, while Austin, Ware and Robbins contributed three each. Close led the team in aces with five, followed by Austin (four) and Moughon and Maddie McCann (two each).
