Lady Devils improve to 10-0; recapture tournament title
It was a busy week for the Mathews High School varsity volleyball team, as the squad recaptured Endless Summer Volleyball Tournament in Virginia Beach during the weekend. Bookending the team’s 5-0 tournament performance, the Lady Devils defeated Essex and Lancas-ter in straight sets.
Mathews hosted Essex last Thursday, defeating the Trojans by scores of 25-19, 25-14 and 25-17.
Maddie McCann led the Devils with 10 kills followed by Mackenzie Moughon with six, Teeny Robbins with three, Kai McCann with two, Amber Burruss with two, and Rachel Close, Shelby Ware and Hannah Rowe with one apiece. Ware collected 67 assists on the night. Close led the team in digs with seven, followed by Kacie Austin (five), Maddie McCann (four), Moughon (three), Hailey Abernathy (three) and Whitney Eriksen (one). Austin led the team with followed aces, followed by Maddie McCann with three, and Robbins, Burruss and Ware with one apiece.
For the second year in a row, the Lady Devils captured the Endless Summer Tournament title. MHS, the top-seeded team, started off in a pool representing the top four teams in the whole division. If it won that pool, it went into the gold bracket of the playoffs.
The Devils rose to the challenge and went 5-0 for the day, defeating teams from Peninsula Catholic, Christchurch School, Norfolk Academy, Denbigh Baptist and Park View High School.
After defeating the first three teams in pool play, Mathews advanced to the semifinals against Denbigh Baptist. They had two strong hitters who hit hard and down from the outside, but unfortunately for them, "I played the best game of my life," screamed libero Rachel Close after the match.
She truly did, she was able to dig up nearly everything the hitter attempted to put down, and she outhustled everyone in the gym. In the final match of the day, the Devils took on the Park View Dragons for the title.
