Lady Devils drop two games

The Mathews High School girls’ varsity basketball team dropped two contests this past week, losing to a pair of Northern Neck opponents.

Last Thursday, the Blue Devils ran into a red-hot Lancaster team, falling 45-23. The Red Devils jumped out to a 21-4 first-quarter lead. Mathews was able to battle back in the second and third quarters, cutting the lead to 12 at one point.

However, Mathews could never overcome the terrible first quarter. Mackenzie Moughon and Shelby Ware led Mathews with seven and six points, respectively, followed by Emily Brown and Hannah Rowe with four points each. Rounding out the scoring was Taylor South with two points.

Mathews returned home on Tuesday and had a disappointing outing again Rappahannock, losing 43-33. Head coach Allie Robins stressed the importance of team defense and stopping the opponent’s fast break opportunities. "We work really hard on the offensive end but give up too many easy baskets on the other," Robins said.

Robins was pleased with the performance of 10th grader Kai McCann under the basket as McCann hauled in 11 rebounds for the night. Rappahannock pushed a one-point halftime lead to 10 points in the third quarter, holding that lead until the final buzzer.
